THE KEYS OF BABEL Carina Rozenfeld

I devoured this novel for teenagers virtually in one go, as the story is gripping, and almost plausible in the future ...

men took refuge in a gigantic tower, Babel, after totally polluted Earth. The LMC has poisoned the atmosphere, making all life outdoors impossible.
Liram lives in Air, in higher floors of the tower. Following the assassination of its wild relatives, he should leave his protected world and descend into the lower floors to save his life.

In his flight, he will understand what is its mission, raising teenagers like him, having a tattoo similar to hers, the brand that will allow them to finally open the door of Babel, because after ten centuries, the air is finally again become clear ...
Liram go from surprise to astonishment in discovering the lower worlds, where people have survived in sometimes inhumane, and where even some have been victims of mutations.

The five young people will they finally to open the door, and under what conditions?

This text is beautifully written, and carries a valuable message of hope and tolerance, in a post-apocalyptic ending, where one sometimes feels out of air.
He was competing for the Prix Marguerite Audoux 2009.
