Jim, a dentist, decides to drop its activities for one year and go on an island south Alaska with his son Roy, 13, better known to history, to break with a newspaper he no longer supports, to take stock of his marriage, and many other reasons all the more questionable ones than others. Early in the novel, we are caught in the heavy atmosphere that prevails between the two men, while discovering the beautiful scenery of Alaska.
Very quickly, the organization of Jim seems rather low, and to top it off, a bear attacked their cabin and decimates all the food they provided to make it through the winter ...
They will put on fishing, hunting, smoking and drying their catch and especially trying to silence their personal problems and questions ...
But why Jim goes there his nights crying and telling her private life to Roy, who feels increasingly ill ...
Throughout the first part of the book, one feels that a drama can not fail to occur.
And indeed it does, but not as expected.
The second part is abhorrent to me, as one discovers the perverse soul of Jim and his total unconsciousness, which led to tragedy.
This is the first novel by David Vann, navigator and author of several technical books on sailing boats and old.
This book recently won the Prix Medicis Etranger.
